12 Black Soldier Fly units launched in Mukuru
The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) has
inaugurated 12 Black Soldier Fly (BSF) units in Mukuru, one of Nairobi’s largest
informal settlements.
The project which aims to tackle both climate
change and youth unemployment focuses on sustainable urban development.
Speaking after the luncheon, GCA CEO Prof. Patrick
V. Verkooijen highlighted the initiative’s potential to address various
challenges.
"The Black Soldier Fly initiative in
Mukuru is a prime example of locally-led climate adaptation. By transforming
waste into valuable resources and empowering youth, we are tackling issues
ranging from flood control to food security," he said.
"This is precisely the kind of scalable,
innovative solution we need to accelerate adaptation efforts across Africa,” he
added.
Formed as a result of partnership
between the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP) and the African
Development Bank (AfDB), the program will be key in equipping Kenyans with
vital skills in waste and business management.
It will also help reduce traditional waste
disposal methods that lead to environmental pollution.
The Black Soldier Flies is vital for
processing organic waste into valuable byproducts such as protein-rich larvae
for livestock feed and nutrient-rich fertilizer.
The program is linked to the Mukuru People's
Adaptation Plan which seeks to cushion those affected by seasonal flooding.
