Although it is difficult to identify the source of the first viral internet meme, the conduits for cultural conversations have become a huge part of pop culture in recent years.
Chances are that if you login to your favourite social media account you will probably participate in a meme trend, deliberately or not.
Memes can go viral at any time and if you've been on Twitter, Instagram or TikTok in the past week, you've probably encountered eye-catching 'Little Miss' memes that people from all over the globe are using to air their insecurities and frustrations pertaining to the world's current state, albeit in a light-hearted manner.
Before writing this piece, Citizen Digital searched the ''Littlemiss" hashtag on TikTok and found that it had over 89 million views and more than 43,000 likes on individual posts.
But where did this batch of now viral memes originate from?
Well, the Little Miss memes characters are drawn from colourful cartoon figures from a series of British children's book, Mr. Men, authored by one Roger Hargreaves in the seventies after his son Adam asked him to illustrate what a tickle looked like.
The first character in the series, Mr. Tickle, an orange figure with long, bendy arms and a blue hat would enjoy global recognition after the book sold more than 100 million copies globally.
Owing to Mr. Men books' worldwide popularity, BBC TV green lit a spin-off television show in the form of the Little Miss series that introduced more characters that are being used in the viral meme trend.
Each new character was given a name based on a single defining characteristic for example Mr. Impossible, whose defining trait is that he can do anything and nothing is impossible for him.
People have now been posting the memes with alternate, witty and somewhat weird captions to detail their single defining traits on social media for example Little Miss internalised rage.
Despite briefly doing rounds on social media in June 2021 thanks largely to a Tumblr user who shared a series of “Little Miss Smokes Too Much Weed” drawings that were received quite well, the memes would be the talk of town a year later after a Twitter user, LittleMissNotes, randomly started posting Little Miss and Mr. Men memes prompting many social media users to join the fad.
