Who was President Kenyatta taking a picture of?

A jovial-looking President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday hang up his official boots for a few minutes, took a camera and began clicking away.

He was spotted taking pictures of his staff during a tree planting exercise at State House, Nairobi.

Behind him, a bodyguard is seen removing his sunglasses, seemingly flabbergasted by the ‘President-turned-photographer.’

The President, seemingly oblivious of the stares and his surroundings for just that one moment, took a swing at photography with one of his staff as his muse.

“He was taking a photograph of one of our cameraman,” State House Spokesperson Kanze Dena told Citizen Digital.

Compared to former Presidents Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki, the current Head of State is not a stranger to public displays of informal gestures.

Kenyans online have even made it a trend to make comical memes out of him.

Just this week, a video of him making a funny face during an official event quickly went viral as Kenyans On Twitter (KOT) swung into action.

A local daily picked it up and did a story with the headline ‘Uhuru gets naughty in State House with facial gesture‘.

In January this year, during the Anti-Corruption Conference at Bomas, Nairobi, the President told Chief Justice David Maraga to get used to bloggers.

This is after CJ Maraga complained that bloggers were editing pictures of him and posting them online.

“Bwana CJ we tried passing some law to help us restrain these people (bloggers) but the court told us it was unconstitutional. Like the rest of us, get used to it,” the President responded amid laughter.

The president has in recent weeks preferred to keep away from public limelight; Kenyans online even started tweeting with the hashtag #FindPresidentUhuru.

He had not been seen publicly since he traveled to China.

CNN reported that the State House spokesperson admitted that she’d not been communicating the president’s activities as she should and promised to share information with the public and journalists more regularly.

“The President is around, it doesn’t mean that because he is not seen in public he is not there, he has an office where he goes every day and he is working on several things,” Dena said.

State House then immediately resumed regularly posting updates of events attended or hosted by the President.

On Friday, he and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta led State House staff in the tree planting exercise.

He called on Kenyans to take advantage of the current rains to plant more trees.

Interior CS Fred Matiangi and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya were also present.
