12-year-old Katelyn Thornley, sneezes up to 12000 times a day.
Instead of focusing on her life, ambitions and family, she is held ransom by the endless sneezes.
The defect began when she was playing the clarinet in school.
Initially, she thought that she was allergic to something. Perhaps she had not washed her napkins properly or that she had not washed her mouthpiece thoroughly.
Katelyn said to herself that it would go away. It never went away since that day.
“I just started in little spurts, sneezing…I’m constantly in pain with my abdomen; my legs are weak. I can barely eat,” Katelyn said.
She also added how exhausting, mentally, physically and emotionally it was sneezing that many times a day.
“She is 22 now and it has never gotten better.” Her mother said amid tears.
“It’s hard to watch.” Her father added emotively.
She wishes she could leave her body and get herself some decent sleep.
“Even in my dreams I sneeze” she said.
The 22-year-old gets to relax when she is listening to the Beatles, a popular English rock band in the 1960s.
The only time she doesn’t sneeze is when she goes to bed at night after taking Benadryl, an antihistamine used to treat sneezing, running nose, itching and other allergies.
Katelyn is not able to attend school because of this defect, she would distract the learning and her schoolmates would make fun of her.
The family has shocked doctors who she has gone to see. The doctors say that she sneezes 20 times a minute.
The family has visited six doctors who have ruled out viruses and allergies. Despite the expert treatment, no medication is working.
Some experts think that it might be a stress-related reaction.
She tries to stay positive and keep up her sense of humor but all she wants is to rid the ‘disorder’ as she calls it and go to school as well as continue to play the clarinet.
Doctors have said that there is no cure for her condition. However, they continue to look at the case and look for any triggers.
Similar stories have been reported such as the woman who was allergic to electricity and the 44-year-old woman who had 100 orgasms a day. There was even a case of a woman who was hypersensitive to all modern technology.
