UK-based Kenyan artist Degs continues to shatter the glass ceiling, conquer new audiences

A UK-based Kenyan vocalist, producer and DJ has continued to make waves, creating a seismic musical revolution that has reverberated from Europe and beyond.

Degs, born Ndegwa, is an artist who embodies the rich tapestry of London’s underground music scene and has carved out a unique niche for himself as a Drum & Bass vocalist, producer, instrumentalist, and DJ.

His story is one of passion, inspiration, and a deep connection to his roots, both in the UK and Kenya.

Growing up, Degs was surrounded by a diverse array of musical genres, from hip-hop and R&B to rock and pop.

His journey into the world of Drum & Bass began in his teenage years when he first encountered Bad Company UK’s album Inside The Machine.

The album’s innovative sound design and high-energy beats captivated him, sparking a lifelong passion.

For Degs, Drum & Bass represents the vibrant and eclectic nature of UK underground and urban culture, a melting pot of styles and influences that he found irresistible.

He also continues to push the boundaries of his craft. His latest single, "Outlaw," a collaboration with Bristol-based producer Hoax, has already started to make waves.

Released by Hospital Records, "Outlaw" is a testament to Degs’ evolving artistry and his commitment to bringing fresh sounds to the Drum & Bass scene.

Degs’ ties to Nairobi run deep - His mother, originally from Kirinyaga, studied at the University of Nairobi before moving to England, where she met Degs' father in 1987.

His first conscious memory of Nairobi dates back to around 1995, when he was struck by the city's vibrancy, sense of community, and incredible cuisine.

From nyama choma to chapatis and stew, Kenyan food holds a special place in his heart.

Through his visits to Nairobi, Degs has gained a profound appreciation for the values of family, community, and generosity - the warm and welcoming nature of Kenyans has left a lasting impression on him, contrasting sharply with his experiences in the UK.

The musical genius is currently immersed in the creation of his second album with Hospital Records.

It's a new project which promises to be more diverse than his debut album, Letters From Ndegwa, which was released in March 2020.

Exciting times lie ahead, as Degs plans to return to Nairobi for a series of shows in September 2024. He also looks forward to visiting The Rev Muhoro School For The Deaf in Mukurweini District, a cause close to his heart due to his father’s background as a retired audiologist.

Additionally, Degs has an ambitious tour schedule lined up, with performances planned in New Zealand, Australia, the USA, Canada, Thailand, India, Indonesia, and across Europe and the UK. With brand new music to share, 2024 is set to be his busiest year yet, and he remains deeply grateful for the support of his fans.

As one of the most streamed Kenyan artists in the world, with a staggering 244k monthly listeners on Spotify and an equally impressive YouTube channel, Degs’ journey is a testament to the power of music and the importance of staying true to one’s roots.
