'Nipigeni risasi!' Man holding machete engages police in dramatic standoff, holds mother and child hostage

A viral video showing a team of police officers attempting to arrest a seemingly deranged man, who is armed and sheltered in his house, has sparked a conversation online.

In the undated video, captured in a Kenyan village, the man can be seen brazenly brandishing a machete as several police officers attempt to effect an arrest.

As the officers talk him out of his stubbornness, the man hears none of it as he bangs the door repeatedly with the machete, daring the officers to shoot him dead and flatly refusing to step out and surrender.

Progressively, the officers lose their patience as the argument escalates -- the man, still, remains unshaken, appearing to further antagonise the officers by throwing around words and even a hurling table at the house's doorstep.

Frustrated, the officers attempt to talk him out of the situation, "Si ulikuja kuomba msamaha tukakusamehea, ama umesahau? Unatushikia panga sisi?" one officer asks.

"Na mimi nimesema hapa sitoki bila kupigwa risasi...nimeamua ivo! Hakuna kubargain hapa!" the man retorts.

"Toa amri afande tumalize hii mtu!" another officer is heard saying.

As the tension builds up, the officers draw closer to the house and it is then evident that the man is also housing a woman and a small child in the same house.

They both can be heard crying out desperately as the police officers and the armed man continue exchanging words.

"Toka nje akukate! Toka nje!" one officer encourages the woman who is apparently held hostage.

"Mimi nimekuja leo hii ni mambo gani uko nayo? Mimi ni mgeni hapa!" the female hostage is heard saying, tearfully.

The confrontation then appears to ease as the man retreats into the house and is heard engaged in arguments with his hostages, who can be heard continuously crying and begging.

While Citizen Digital has not established where in Kenya the incident happened, it does, however, appear to have occurred at night and at a remote village.

The man's house is a mud structure with iron sheet roofing and a wooden door bearing the Rastafarian colours - at the lower bottom, it's emblazoned: "Just Peace Love".

Reacting to the video, many Kenyans expressed their shock at the man's audacity, with others pointing out that he could be having mental health issues and that the police should approach the matter a little more intelligently.

"Holding a machete to the Kenyan police? And you escape alive? Maajabu!" one X user commented.

"I love this man's courage! Yaani you could be staring at several gun barrels and you're still unshaken!? How!? I would have surrendered in less than two minutes aki!" another said.

On his part, Ndegwa J said, "Kenyans are suffering from mental health issues. People are tired, sick, broke and depressed. This man doesn't deserve a bullet, he deserves counselling."

In Kenya, as in many other parts of the world, resisting arrest is a crime.

According to Section 103 (a) of the National Police Service Act No. 11 (A) of 2011, offences related to assault of police or willful obstruction of the police can attract a fine not exceeding Ksh.1 million or imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten years, or to both.
