Meet the Zanzibar divers Lupita agreed to jump into the Indian Ocean with

Lupita was invited to join the group in a video that was posted two weeks ago by Jamal's crew, which is popular on Instagram.

They were all amazed when the "Black Panther" star saw it and actually showed up!

The boys and Lupita would then jump into the Indian Ocean in a subsequent video that was posted by Lupita herself.

But who are these divers who have caught the world’s attention after bagging one of Hollywood A-list celebrities into their escapades?

Dubbed the ‘Zanzibar Fun Divers’, the group comprises skilled teenagers out to promote sports tourism in Zanzibar through ocean diving.

The group is based at Forodhani Beach and the sport has come to be known as ‘Makachu’, attracting hundreds of visitors who visit Stone Town right in front of the Old Fort of Zanzibar.

Makachu involves young boys playing, running and jumping into the sea in the mornings and as the sun sets in the evening, entertaining their guests and making fun videos.

Some of the fun is documented on social media at @makachu_zanzibar on Instagram and Makachu Forodhani on Facebook, where the group enjoys a collective following of over 200,000 fans.

Local data shows that Zanzibar hosted 394,185 guests last year, up from 260,244 in 2020. Before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, island hosted 538,264 visitors in 2019.

Forodhani is among the most visited open spaces in Zanzibar and its history dates back to the early 1900s.

The park was established to mark the Silver Jubilee of Sultan Khalifa, who reigned between 1911 and 1960.

The gardens were first set out in 1936, while the particular waterfront one was built to welcome Britain’s Princess Margaret on a state visit in 1956.

To tourists, the sight of teens sprinting, hopping onto a concrete rise and spiralling in the air before landing in the ocean is a perfect thrill as they devour the assortment of dishes the nearby hotels offer.
