Jamaican reggae icon Buju Banton confirms death of 20-year old son

Jamaican reggae-dancehall legend Buju Banton has confirmed the death of his 20-year-old son Miles Myrie.

The music icon, born Mark Anthony Myrie, shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, along with a photo of his son, captioned with the words “Sip papa God knows.”

Earlier this week, Jahazeil Myrie, another son of Buju Banton, confirmed the tragic news to Jamaican news outlet Observer Online, saying, “Yes it is true. It is not my thing to say, it is not my job personally to give out any personal information about Miles, my father is the one who should share any details, but Miles is an hortical yute, his soul was clean, so I had to say something.”

Miles, who was residing in the United States at the time of his passing, had a significant influence on his brother Jahazeil.

“We grew up together one ah the time dem, and he always would motivate me to never give up. He was a very motivational person no matter wah. When he was younger, he wanted to be a judge but as he got older, he got to love the rapping so he wanted to be a rapper," Jahazeil said.

Amidst the wave of condolences, a video surfaced online featuring a woman blaming Buju for his son's tragic fate.

In an emotional testimony, she revealed that Miles had been under her care for two months due to homelessness. She also spoke about his struggles with potential mental health issues.

Several leading reggae legends have expressed their condolences to the Banton family.

Reggae icon Beres Hammond said, "My deepest condolences to you and your family, my brother."

Sean Paul said, "Jah Jah! Condolences 2 U N Di Fam Mi Bredda!"

Whilst Gramps Morgan said, "Mighty, My Heart is with you Bredda. Prayers with you, the mom and family. Stay strong Mi Bredda!" 

Buju Banton, born in July 15, 1973, in Kingston, Jamaica, grew up in a large family with a rich cultural heritage. His nickname “Buju” was given by his mother and “Banton” was adopted to honour his admired childhood storyteller, Bu rro Banton.
