Eric Omondi declares himself, Diamond Platnumz 'the most talked about artistes in East Africa'
Eric Omondi, the self-proclaimed president of
comedy in Africa, now claims Tanzanian heavy-hitter Diamond Platnumz and
himself are in the lead in East Africa as the most talked about celebrities.
“I want to inform the
entertainment industry that the most talked about artistes in East Africa are
Diamond Platnumz and Eric Omondi,” the comedian said in an interview on Citizen
TV’s 10 over 10 show on Friday.
The CEO of Big Tyme Entertainment
sought to demystify assumptions that he, alongside, other East African artists,
rely on clout to remain relevant.
“In layman’s language people call
it clout, but it’s creativity, entertainment and showbiz. We are trying our
best not to be boring and predictable. We are pushing a brand,” he stated.
Quoting Dave Chappelle, an
American stand-up comedian, Omondi said, “Comedians are supposed to push the
line, because we are the mirrors of the society.”
He added: “Entertainment is not
only about music and comedy, but it is also a lifestyle. The work of an
entertainer is to push the envelope and cross the line. We are allowed,
especially comedians.”
The controversial comedian said
this following backlash of a fake pregnancy stunt he recently pulled with
singer Miss P to launch her new song dubbed ‘Baby Shower.’
"I was introducing Miss P
and we were pushing her work. I needed attention on her, and we had to do what
we did," he said.
Omondi added that their efforts
bore fruits as they have events lined up over the weekend for Miss P.
“We have Miss P’s event on
Saturday in Nakuru, courtesy of an MP from Bahati Constituency with 622
expectant ladies, and another one on Sunday in Nairobi with 712 more expectant
ladies, courtesy of the governor of Nairobi," he said.
