Drake sues UMG over Kendrick Lamar's diss track
According to Drake's legal filing, Universal Music Group (UMG) and Spotify allegedly rigged the game by using bots, shady payments, and platform manipulations to inflate the song’s streams and undercut his reputation.
"This isn’t just a rap feud. It’s a legal thriller with bots, payola, and corporate sabotage in the mix."
Drake's team claims that UMG paid Apple to have Siri redirect fans searching for his album, Certified Lover Boy, to Kendrick’s track, which includes the provocative line “Certified Lover Boy?/ Certified paedophile.”
There's also an accusation that Spotify recommended the diss to fans searching for unrelated artists, creating what Drake’s team calls an "illegal scheme" to tip the scales in Kendrick’s favour.
The lawsuit accuses UMG of running a full-scale operation to boost the diss track, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts earlier this year.
UMG, however, has dismissed the claims, calling them "absurd" and emphasizing their ethical marketing practices.
UMG in a statement said, “The suggestion that UMG would do anything to undermine any of its artists is offensive and untrue.
"No amount of contrived and absurd legal arguments in this pre-action submission can mask the fact that fans choose the music they want to hear.” They added.
Will this case redefine beef in the music industry, or is it just another chapter in hip-hop’s wild history?
