‘Claims that I worked in a brothel are false,’ singer Marya now says

Singer Marya

Despite rumors to the contrary, Marya, who wrote the hit song "Chokoza" with Avril, now denies ever working in a brothel.

The singer said while trying to make ends meet, she requested help from her fellow friends in the industry but was unsuccessful, and she ended up associating herself with ‘a bad group of women.’

“You’re going to people in the industry who have connections…but it all went to deaf ears so nikajipata nimejiassociate na a bad group of women na ivo ndio jina ya Marya ilienda ivo,” she said during an interview with Eve Mungai, Tuesday.

When asked if the rumor about her working in a brothel was true, she stated that she had never worked in one.

“It was just associating myself with people, haikuwa working,” Marya said.

Her problems, according to the mother of one, began after her five-year contract with her then-signed label, Ogopa Deejays, expired.

“Once the five year contract iliisha that was it…I never got signed and apo ndio kidogo nilianza kwenda chini,” she said.

The 'Chokoza' singer, who had put all of her eggs in the Ogopa Deejays basket, stated that she tried doing music on her own but that all of her attempts failed.

“Nilikuwa natry nagonga ukuta and nikigonga ukuta narudi chini…nikifika mahali najipata narudi back to the drawing board.” Marya said.

“Finances and sikuwa na manager, so I think I was too dependent on the fact that the Ogopa used to handle everything,” Marya said.

She would later get a call center job in Dubai with the help of her then-lover and son's father, but even this job would not last long.

After learning that she was pregnant, she moved back to Kenya and, being a single mother, got another call center job to make ends meet.

“Nilipata mtu alikuwa Dubai…akanisaidia nikatry kuapply jobs and I got a call center job and that is where musically ilinitoka…next minute blink of an eye nimepata mtoto,"

"I came back to Kenya nikapata job, I took advantage of that ndio nipate stability ya mtoto, within one year the job was over," she added.

Following her misfortunes, Marya stated that she is only now beginning to reclaim her life, and that she hopes to return to the music industry in the future, but that she is currently focused on her online clothing business.

"Nitarudi, and kwa mafans wangu bado nataka wanisupport on my online business..."
