Kenya Power has blocked third-party vendors such as banks and shops from selling prepaid electricity tokens.

Effective Thursday, September 1, the State-owned utility company said it has terminated all contracts it signed with service providers in purchasing tokens.

In a notice on August 30, the company said that purchase of prepaid tokens as well as postpaid bill payments will only be done through M-PESA Paybill, KPLC banking halls or via a USSD code.

“The purchase of prepaid tokens and payment of postpaid bills will only be made through the following authorised channels: Prepaid Channels (Tokens) M-PESA Paybill 888880; Postpaid Channels (Bills) M-PESA Paybill 888888 or Authorised banks (https://kplc.co.ke/content/item/30),” read a part of the notice.

Payment of new Connections will be made through M-PESA Paybill number 888899, while customers can also make payments through or purchase tokens via USSD code *977#.

Customers can also access these services through KPLC banking halls countrywide.

“Please note that no other third-party agent is authorised to offer these services on behalf of KPLC. The Company will therefore not take liability for any transaction conducted through any other platform,” Kenya Power said.

Some of the third-party vendors that have been buying tokens for prepaid customers include VendIT and Dynamo Digital, as well as cyber cafes and corner shops.
