Instagram has rolled out the ability to schedule direct messages (DMs).

The Meta-owned social media platform now lets users type messages and choose up to 29 days in advance when they want their messages sent.

The feature is rolling out for all users globally and will come in handy for brands that want to schedule outreach messages during internet peak hours as well as users seeking to reach their friends at specific times or send advance reminders.

How it works

To schedule an Instagram DM;

  1. Type your message,
  2. Long-press the send button,
  3. Choose a specific date and time you want your message delivered. The time zone is based on the sender’s device settings and a notification that you have “1 scheduled message” will show every time you open the chat until the DM is delivered.

For now, Instagram says the feature is limited to text messages, so sending photos and videos can only be done in real-time.

DM scheduling adds to updates Instagram has introduced to its messaging service in the recent past as it seeks to take on rivals like Snapchat.

Some of the updates Instagram has incorporated in DMs include message editing, drawing on photos, sharing live locations with friends and the ability for users to add nicknames for DMs, instead of using their Instagram names.
