A 53-year-old woman died after sustaining stab wounds during an incident at Kiandegwa Village in Mwea, Kirinyaga County, with police arresting her husband in connection with the case.

The deceased, identified as Peris Njoki Wanjohi, was taken to Mwea Mission Hospital in Karira, where she later died while receiving treatment.

According to police and residents, the incident is alleged to have followed a domestic dispute over a radio that had reportedly been sold.

Police said Njoki's husband, Alexander Chomba, is the main suspect in the case and is assisting investigators. Authorities allege that a kitchen knife was used during the incident.

Chomba also sustained injuries after he was reportedly attacked by members of the public following the incident. He was rescued by a Good Samaritan and taken to Mwea Mission Hospital in the same vehicle that transported Njoki.

After receiving treatment, Chomba was arrested by detectives from Mwea West Sub-County and is currently being held at Kiamaciri Police Station pending investigations.

Residents who gathered at the hospital expressed shock over the incident.

Benson Gichira, a resident, claimed that the dispute may have been linked to the sale of a family radio.

"I am saddened by what happened. We were told the disagreement arose after questions were raised about the family radio. The matter should have been resolved peacefully," said Gichira.

Relatives from both families later converged at the hospital to console one another.

Njoki's daughter, Mary Nyawira, said Chomba had been part of the family for about 10 years.

"My mother came from Kiriko Village in Gathigiri Ward. She married Alexander Chomba 10 years ago and later brought her four children to live with them. We respected him as our father. We are now struggling to come to terms with what has happened," she said.

According to Kimuri Sub-Location Assistant Chief Waweru Gatere, Njoki moved to Kiandegwa Village about a decade ago, where she initially worked as a bar attendant before marrying Chomba and settling in the area.

"After the marriage, she brought her four children from Kiriko, and they lived together as a family. Chomba and Njoki did not have children together," said Gatere.

The administrator described Njoki as a hardworking and disciplined woman who supported her family through casual jobs and helped educate two of her children through college.

"She related well with members of the community. The incident has shocked many residents," he said.

Chomba's mother, Beatrice Waithera, said she had received reports of disagreements between her son and some family members but urged that the matter be handled through due process.

"Investigations should be allowed to take their course so that the truth can be established," she said.

Mwea West Sub-County Police Commander Millicent Ngugi said the case is being investigated by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

She said detectives are expected to present the suspect before the Baricho Law Courts to seek orders allowing them to continue holding him as investigations continue.

Police have urged members of the public to allow investigations to proceed and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
