The suspect, identified as Frolence Ngendo Nyambura, was confronted by her neighbours as she allegedly carried out the act on the minor.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Police officers from Dandora Police Station, accompanied by the Sub-County Children Officer, responded to the incident at Dandora Phase 2 Estate after neighbours raised the alarm and confirmed the Incident.
DCI has said that the minor, who had already undergone the mutilation, was immediately rescued and rushed to Dandora Phase 3 Health Centre, where she received medical attention.
She was later discharged and placed in a safe home to facilitate her recovery and ensure her continued protection.
Nyambura is now being held at Dandora Police Station and is set to face charges of performing FGM and cruelty to a child, among other charges.
FGM is illegal in Kenya as the FGM Act 2011 criminalises the practice, facilitating heavy penalties for practitioners, family members, and medical professionals who perform FGM.
Recent legislative reviews are moving to ensure victims/survivors are treated and protected rather than criminalized or subjected to degrading examinations.
Kenya has scaled up multi-agency efforts to eradicate the practice by 2030 through the Anti-FGM Board, a semi-autonomous government agency established in December 2013.
FGM impacts the health of girls both short-term and long-term and poses psychological and social impacts.
