WITIA launches smart library in Machakos to boost digital learning for over 500 pupils

The facility, established by Women in Technology and Innovation Africa (WITIA), was officially opened on Friday by the Director of Basic Education at the Ministry of Education, Stephen Barongo, who represented Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba.

The launch marks the expansion of WITIA's Smart Libraries initiative into the Ukambani region and supports the government's efforts to integrate technology into education under Kenya's digital transformation agenda.

The library has been equipped with 37 smart computers, internet connectivity and a wide collection of books, providing learners with access to digital books, research materials and interactive learning platforms designed to support the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum.

Speaking during the launch, Barongo said smart libraries will play a critical role in modernizing education by expanding access to technology and improving digital literacy among learners.

He said the initiative will reduce reliance on printed learning materials, strengthen digital infrastructure and connectivity in schools, and equip learners with skills needed for higher education, employment and participation in the digital economy.

Barongo added that the programme supports the government's Digital Superhighway agenda by increasing access to modern learning tools in schools and communities while promoting research, innovation and lifelong learning.

Women in Technology and Innovation Africa Founder and Chairperson Eunice Pohlmann said the initiative is aimed at ensuring that children in underserved communities have the same opportunities to access technology-enabled education as their peers elsewhere.

She noted that the Smart Library provides an inclusive learning environment where learners can build digital skills, enhance creativity and prepare for future opportunities in a technology-driven world.

"Education is the greatest equalizer, but in today's world it must be accompanied by digital access. Through the Smart Library Initiative, we are ensuring that learners in every part of Kenya can access the same opportunities to learn, innovate, and compete globally," she said.

Beyond the library, WITIA has also renovated three classrooms at the school to create a more conducive learning environment.

The Mbukoni facility is WITIA's second Smart Library after the successful establishment of a similar centre at Nkaimurunya Comprehensive School in Kajiado County. The organisation plans to roll out more smart libraries across underserved schools in Kenya as part of efforts to bridge the digital divide and improve equitable access to quality education.
