National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has taken aim at Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, saying aspiring to become President requires experience, national networks and years of political engagement, not just a sudden entry into the political scene.

Wetang’ula urged young politicians seeking the country’s top seat to be patient and build relationships across Kenya, warning against assuming leadership before establishing a strong national political base.

Speaking to residents in Bungoma on Friday, the Speaker cited Kenya’s political history, arguing that leaders who have risen to the presidency or mounted serious presidential bids have done so after years of political involvement.

He gave examples of founding President Jomo Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, saying national leadership requires resilience and the ability to work with former political opponents.

Wetang’ula said Odinga demonstrated political maturity by reaching out to those he had previously disagreed with in the interest of building the country.

“A leader must have experience, know the people and travel across Kenya. You must build friendships,” he said, urging politicians to establish networks beyond their home regions.

He warned against a generation of young politicians who, in his view, expect to rise to the presidency shortly after entering the political scene, without first building the experience and relationships needed to command national support.

The Speaker also called on residents of Western Kenya to consolidate their political influence by increasing voter registration and mobilising behind a common regional agenda.
