Rainfall is expected to continue in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the South Rift Valley, the Coast and parts of north-eastern Kenya this week, with the Kenya Meteorological Department warning that heavy downpours may occur in some areas along the Coast.

In its weekly forecast covering May 26 to June 1, 2026, the department said the Coast could experience occasional showers in the morning, afternoon and at night, sometimes spreading to several places.

For the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley, the weatherman forecast sunny intervals in the mornings, with afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms expected in a few places.

In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, mornings are expected to be cloudy with occasional showers in a few areas, giving way to sunny intervals, with occasional afternoon and night showers.

In north-eastern Kenya, sunny intervals are expected during the day with partly cloudy conditions at night, though morning rains and afternoon or night showers may occur in a few places during the second half of the forecast period.

In the south-eastern lowlands, sunny intervals are expected during the day and partly cloudy nights, with isolated afternoon showers likely in a few areas.

The department said daytime temperatures of above 30°C are expected in the Coast, parts of the south-eastern lowlands and north-eastern and north-western Kenya, while night-time temperatures may drop below 10°C in parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley and areas around Mt Kilimanjaro.

In its review for May 18 to 24, the department said rainfall was recorded in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and parts of north-eastern Kenya, noting that amounts reduced significantly compared to the previous week.

The highest seven-day rainfall total, 61.5mm, was recorded at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) station in Nairobi County, which also recorded the highest 24-hour amount of the week on May 21.
