The Chairman of the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations committee, Samuel Atandi has told off critics who are against government borrowing.

According to Atandi, also Alego Usonga Member of Parliament, borrowing is necessary to enable the state to develop previously neglected regions.

The budget chair argued that public debt accumulation will continue if the regions previously neglected by the earlier regimes were to catch up with the rest of the county.

“I want to tell the opponents of the government that borrowing will continue. We shall continue borrowing because there are problems that must be resolved” he said during a project launch at Nyajuok comprehensive school in Siaya County.

Atandi lamented that previous regimes did not used borrowed funds equitably. It  is  his argument that though all Kenyans pay for debts, previous administrations diverted the funds to specific regions that they either hailed from or had interests in.

He said that the current regime was committed to developing every corner of the country and will use both the taxes and borrowed funds equitably.

"Because all Kenyans, regardless of whether their region directly benefited from past infrastructure projects, are liable for repaying national debt, any future loan disbursements will be distributed equally” said the MP.
