Mwamba RFC's
Kevin 'Bling' Wambua is the new Kenya men's Sevens team head coach, Kenya Rugby
Union (KRU) announced Friday afternoon.
Wambua who
takes over from Briton Damian McGrath will be deputised by Louis Kisia, while
Steve Sewe is the Team Manager.
Lameck
Bogonko is the team's Physio, as former captain Andrew Amonde takes the
strength and conditioning coach role.
Chris Brown
is the consultant, strength and conditioning coach while Tom Ogweno holds the
team liaison position.
The new
technical bench will be in charge until the end of 2024 Olympic qualifiers,
according to KRU Chairman Sasha Mutai.
Mutai said McGrath’s
departure had been on a mutual agreement and pledged to build on the progress
made under him.
“This is a
smooth transition because we had a discussion with Damian the other week and
this week on Tuesday we also met the new manager. Dimian would have been here
but he is on a plane we parted ways amicably. Kenya sevens has been known as a
graveyard of coaches but we want to change that narrative,” Mutai said.
He added the
union was keen to bring more sponsorship partners on board.
“We have
been in negotiation with partners so we have a number of them lined up. Last
week we had cocktail for partners so the commercial side is handled really
well. You will be seeing more sponsorships coming in every week.”
The biggest job on Wambua’s hand will be to help return Kenya to the World Rugby Sevens series following its relegation in May.
