The High Court on Wednesday upheld the conviction of former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waitiu, his wife and co-accused in a Ksh.588 million corruption case.

In a ruling delivered by Lady Justice Rose Ougo, the High Court upheld the convictions on the other charges and overturned the subordinate court's acquittal on the money laundering charges.

He is accused alongside his wife Susan Wangari Ndungu, former Kiambu County Chief Officer for Roads, Transport, Public Works and Utilities Luka Mwangi Wahinya and Charles Chege Mbuthia, a director of Testimony Enterprises Limited.

The accused had challenged their convictions on charges of conflict of interest, dealing with suspect property, abuse of office, engaging in fraudulent practices in procurement and fraudulent acquisition of public property arising from matters during Waititu’s tenure as Kiambu Governor.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) said that the court also revoked the bonds granted to the accused, ordering that Susan be detained at Lang’ata Women’s Prison, while Waititu and the male co-accused be detained at Nairobi Remand Prison pending mitigation and sentencing.

The ex-Governor, in February 2026, received a reprieve after the High Court granted his application for review of bail terms to Ksh.20 million, pending appeal.

The court granted the appellants 14 days within which to appeal the decision, as the matter is scheduled for sentencing at the Anti-Corruption Magistrate’s Court on October 19.
