Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has defended her support for President William Ruto, saying it is driven by development interests for the county.

Speaking in Wang’uru town during the launch of the Mwea Integrated Water Supply Rehabilitation and Expansion Project, Waiguru said county governments lack adequate resources and must work with the national government to deliver mega projects.

“There is no governor who can develop a county fully without support from the national government. I have decided to be strategic and stay in government so I can get more resources,” she said.

Without naming individuals, Waiguru said she was abused over the weekend near her mother’s home. She condemned the character of the abusive leaders.

Over the weekend, former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, who accompanied former Kirinyaga Woman Rep Wangui Ngirici, accused Waiguru of mismanaging the county and urged Kirinyaga residents to elect Wangui.

“Some of those abusing me near my mother’s homestead are people I once defended, but right now they are abusing me,” Waiguru said.

She also addressed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment, saying she was not in the Senate or National Assembly and wondered why some people were bitter with her.

Waiguru said politics is about interests, not a “love affair,” adding that Ruto has Mt. Kenya’s interests at heart. She criticized opposition leaders for having an “empty rhetoric” with no development record.

She recalled working with former President Uhuru Kenyatta, which she said helped Kirinyaga secure key road projects.

“I am firmly in government to ensure Kirinyaga continues to benefit from roads, modern markets, and hospitals,” she said.

The governor urged issue-based politics and cautioned residents against “empty promises” that could derail ongoing projects.

“We should not destroy our progress. Let not our pain cause harm,” she said.
