The National Super League (NSL) came to a dramatic finish on Saturday as Vihiga United and Wazito FC secured automatic Kenyan Premier League places for 2018.

A din of delight went up at the final whistle as Vihiga defeated Ushuru FC 1-0 at the Mumias Complex to clinch the NSL title on goal difference after Wazito produced a stirring 5-2 win over Kenya Police at the Narok County Stadium.

The encounter in Mumias endured an ill-tempered finish as the home fans hurled stones onto the pitch in protest of the officiating after seven minutes of stoppage time were added but the result stood as joyful supporters spilled out to join coach Edward Manoah and his charges in celebration.

It marked a crushing end for Ushuru who had led a tight leading pack of four during the latter stages of the campaign as their bid for quick return top flight football collapsed at the hands of Vihiga.

Bernard Ochieng was the hero as Vihiga consigned their 2016 nightmarish memories that saw them miss out on promotion by one place when a record four teams were promoted to the KPL.

At the time, Vihiga had finished fifth behind Nakumatt FC, Zoo Kericho FC, Kariobangi Sharks and champions Nzoia United.
