It is not unusual to find a warthog roaming around this facility, or bump into a tortoise.
It has been known to host a variety of animals – an institution in the wild, one could say.
However, students have also borne the brunt of animals wreaking havoc from time to time.
Location? Multimedia University.
The public university sits on 115 hectares and is adjacent to the Nairobi National Park.
Students have told tales of monkeys raiding classrooms and disintegrating resources.
One student, Kim, shared his experience: “There was a time a student spotted a hyena and the school gave a notice to students to be careful around the university compound.”
Students often spot baboons, monkeys and warthogs roaming freely. “A number of students have suffered after the baboons enter student hostels, take food and leave the room in a mess.”
“Food vendors and shop owners around the school have not been spared either, with some students being chased by the baboons after making purchases.”
In another incident last week, a tortoise was spotted and in yet another incident, a cheetah was spotted, with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) being alerted and arriving take away the animal.
While students say their facility offers a unique experience being near a national park, they have also raised safety concerns.
One student was almost attacked after a hyena followed her as she made her way to her hostel. She at first thought it was a dog, only to realise it was a hyena as it came closer.
“I could hear the hyena ‘laughing’ and got scared and ran to the hostel,” the student said.
