Ulinzi Starlets ramp up title push with five new signings

Ulinzi Starlets have unveiled five new signings ahead of the new Kenyan Women’s Premier League (KWPL) season, set to kick off on September 19.

The new arrivals are midfielders Velma Awuor and Hellen Mito from Madira Soccer Assassins, Medina Masinde from Mars Queens, and Vihiga Queens duo Mercy Akoth and Ruth Khasowa.

The Soldiers have also been boosted by the return of seven players who have completed their military training.

They include Lavenda Akinyi, Cindy Ngaira, Claire Namsabi, Joy Kinglady Oriyo, Tabitha Amoit, Mary Ojenge, and Monalisa Omwenga.

Head coach Collins Achieng says the new additions will strengthen the squad as they target the league title after finishing second last season.

“I want to welcome back our players who completed their military training. That was life skills and their mind are now well settled for next season. For the new players, we also welcome them and believe they will instrumental in our bid to win the title,” said Achieng.

The players, led by captain Diana Shakava, have also welcomed the signings, saying the team’s lack of depth last season has now been addressed.

“As players, we want to thank the management for scouting the players. Last season we lacked depth, which has been addressed by the acquisition of the new faces.”

Club patron Joseph Ochieng urged the team to be more focused and aim for the title.

 “The team is well prepared for the new season and we knew where we fell short last season and have invested to correct the mess. We have given the coach all the freedom to assemble a great team, and I believe it will write history by winning the league,” Ochieng noted.

Ulinzi Starlets finished second last season with 47 points, five behind champions Kenya Police Bullets.
