Two people died on Sunday evening and three others were injured after a lorry transporting bricks rammed into a shop at Kawa Shopping Centre in Migori County.

Eyewitnesses reported that the driver lost control of the lorry, which was heading towards Isebania and accelerated uncontrollably. It then hit a perimeter wall and crashed into the shop.

This marks the sixth accident at the small shopping centre, with eight cumulative fatalities since the bypass was commissioned for use.

Traders in the area are now calling for the bypass to be redesigned and properly marked to reduce accidents.

The road is currently experiencing heavy traffic due to the diversion of vehicles from Migori Bridge, which is under maintenance.

Drivers of heavy commercial vehicles have been urged to exercise caution when approaching the junction, which has become a notorious black spot, especially during the rainy season when roads are slippery.

Caleb Opondi, the County Executive Committee member for Public  Health and Medical Services, confirmed the incident. Bodies of the deceased were taken to the county referral morgue, while the injured were rushed to the facility’s emergency care wing for treatment.
