Two miners died on Thursday after rock debris fell on them  while inside a gold mine in Akala area, Nyatike, in Migori county.

Reports indicate that four other people sustained injuries in the accident – and had to be rushed to hospital.

Migori county artisanal miner’s association chairperson Kephas Ojuka confirmed the incident.

“The two miners died on the spot, while four were injured and had to be rushed to Migori referral hospital for treatment. One of the four miners sustained serious injuries while three had minor injuries,” said Ojuka.

According to Ojuka, the miners were prospecting gold when the rock debris fell off from the wall of the mine killing two and injuring four.

Reports indicate that the killer mine was inspected by engineers before the miners begun prospecting gold a few hours before the incident.

Investigations have begun to find out what may have caused the accident.
