Two boys aged 13 and 14 have died after drowning in a dam formed by the Gatara River waterfall in Rukubi village, Kabete Sub-County, Kiambu County.

The incident occurred as the minors were returning home from catechism classes at Kingeero Catholic Church.

According to preliminary reports, the boys stopped at the waterfall and decided to swim in the dam, leaving a third boy behind to watch over their clothes.

Moments later, the third child raised an alarm after failing to see his friends resurface, prompting residents to rush to the scene.

Locals say the area is particularly hazardous, noting that the waterfall attracts frequent visitors due to its scenic appeal despite posing significant safety risks.

Residents are now urging authorities to secure the site by fencing it off and installing warning signs to prevent further loss of life.

The bodies of the two boys were later retrieved by volunteer divers and taken to St. Teresa Mortuary in Kikuyu.

Police have launched investigations into the incident.
