Police on Saturday arrested two suspected criminals for allegedly breaking into a signal sub-station for the new Standard Gauge Railway and stealing 8 batteries used to power gadgets that send signals to the SGR Headquarters.

According to Mwatate Deputy County commissioner Ken Murungi, when the suspects broke into the sub-station, they managed to disconnect the batteries but the gadgets sent signals to the SGR headquarters immediately alerting police.

Speaking to the media, Murungi said police are on high alert further warning that criminals vandalizing SGR property will not be spared.

The stolen batteries were later recovered several meters from the sub-station hidden in a bush.

The two suspects are said to have been working as casual labourers at the SGR during its inception but investigations are underway to establish whether there are other people involved in the robbery.

The suspects were taken to Voi Railway police station awaiting to be arraigned in court on Monday.
