Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen says the leaking roof at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) is a result of poor workmanship by the contractor and engineers who were doing renovations at Terminal 1C and 1 E in the previous government of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

He said the contractors hurriedly carried out the temporary renovations without meeting the required standards since the government was in the process of decommissioning the terminal and constructing a new one.

Speaking in Diani, Kwale County while inspecting the expansion of Diani Airport, Murkomen said the renovations will be redone according to the required standards.

He maintained the engineers and contractor who were overseeing the renovations will have to explain why they did a shoddy job that led to the leaking yesterday.

They will have to explain the scope of work that was used in the renovations that when there is heavy rainfall, there must be a leakage," he said.

He however said the leaking roof has been temporarily fixed to avert further leakage in this rainy season.

The CS said a new contract will be awarded to construct a new terminal in the greenfield area at the Airport.

The contract will be a private-public partnership that will commence in January 2024.

"We already have the feasibility study and the President has said we have to deliver a complete new Airport by 2027," he said.

On the power supply at the airport, Murkomen said that the government has already fixed the outage challenge by installing a stand-by generator but still, there is a hiccup on interchange time.

He said the power interchange is now taking 20 minutes but they are working to ensure they reduce the time to 30 seconds.
