Transami, Pipeline: Residents worry as some sex workers move into estates

Residents of Transami and Pipeline estates in Embakasi, Nairobi, have raised concern over a new trend that has seen some sex workers move their operations to residential areas, even at the doorsteps of apartments.

A trade that was once confined to nightclubs, bar and famous street corners, has now crept into doorsteps, prompting concern among residents.

“As a parent with teenage children, this trend is deeply worrying because it’s happening right in the faces of our children,” said Patrick Musyoka, a resident of Pipeline who works as a mechanic at a logistics firm.

“The other day I left work at around 11 pm only to find two women standing near my gate, dressed in very revealing outfits,” recalled Musyoka, adding that this has become a common happening in the populous estate.

According to the residents, the young women often make bold approaches, targeting men, especially young men, returning home from work late at night.

“Some of these girls can be quite vulgar, should you choose to ignore them when they try to engage you. It can be quite embarrassing if you are with your son or daughter,” said Michael Kabiru, a resident of the nearby Transami estate.

“If this continues, we’re going to lose our children,” said Denis Mugweru, a resident of Pipeline.

Mugweru believes that a majority of the young girls are being pushed into estate sex work due to joblessness and tough economic times.

Tenants and estate leaders are now urging landlords to help them contain the problem.
