In Kagumo Sub-location, Mutira Ward, Kirinyaga Central, two suspects were arrested at around 3am on Thursday while allegedly stealing coffee from a farm owned by Francis Gacharei.
Village elders, led by Gatiri Kaburu Kiragu, said the suspects were among seven people found harvesting coffee on the farm.
Kiragu said the elders managed to arrest two suspects, while five others escaped and are being pursued.
“I was called by the farm owner, Francis Gacharei, and I contacted fellow elders from Kagumo Sub-location. When we arrived at the farm, we saw the damage they had caused. We arrested two, but five managed to escape. They had destroyed coffee branches and collected about half a sack of coffee,” Kiragu said.
Another elder, Philip Wachira, said the suspects had harvested more than 25 kilogrammes of coffee.
Wachira said the suspects disclosed the identities of people they allegedly worked with and brokers who bought the stolen coffee, prompting the elders to search for other suspects.
He added that the suspects appeared to have come from outside Kagumo Sub-location, noting that one identified himself as Machinery from Mutira.
The elders also accused coffee brokers of facilitating the theft by buying stolen produce.
“They were destroying more than 12 coffee stems, harvesting both ripe and unripe coffee. There are brokers encouraging these people to steal. We are putting them on notice that after pursuing the thieves, we will also go after those buying stolen coffee,” elder Samuel Maina said.
Farm owner Gacharei, who is in Nairobi, said he alerted the elders after receiving reports of the theft.
“These people have made my farm their playing ground. It is good that some have been arrested. My brother is there with the elders,” he said.
The two suspects are being held at Kagumo Police Station as investigations continue.
In a separate incident, a middle-aged man was arrested at Mukangu Shopping Centre in Ndia while allegedly transporting half a sack of coffee cherries.
Mukangu Coffee Factory chairman Samuel Mwangi Wamae said the suspect claimed to come from Kiamumu in Kairini and was not a coffee farmer.
Wamae said the suspect's grandmother reportedly confirmed that he was not a coffee farmer when contacted.
The suspect is being held at Mukangu Police Post as investigations continue.
The arrests come amid growing concerns over coffee theft in Kirinyaga County, with high coffee prices cited as a possible incentive for the crime.
