Three suspects in custody as two-week-old baby remains missing in Kibera

One of the suspects is accused of misleading detectives during the search for the child, who went missing on August 17, 2026.

Sophia Were had given birth to a baby boy at a hospital in Kangemi. Two weeks later, desperation allegedly forced her to leave the newborn at a medical facility in Makina, Kibera.

She said she needed to find casual work and raise Ksh.2,000 for transport back home.

“I found this woman and asked her whether she could help me find someone trustworthy to stay with my child for two weeks as I looked for casual work and raised Ksh.2,000 to travel back home. At around 2 pm, a man and a woman came here and moved around the facility. The woman then took my child,” Were stated.

She noted that the woman she refers to as Jane was the one who took her baby.

CCTV footage appears to capture what happened next. At 6:52 pm, Jane emerged from the facility wearing a white apron and gloves.

Two minutes later, at 6:54 pm, a saloon car arrived. Detectives believe it was the vehicle used to transport the missing baby. The driver has been identified as Benedict Ocholla Ogondi.

The CCTV footage also captured Jane meeting a woman wearing pink trousers and a black top, identified as Rosemary Adhiambo Ager, whom detectives are treating as the main suspect. The two then entered the facility.

“The woman took my child and left with a man. After waiting for some time, I called the man and told him I wanted my baby back, but he switched off his phone and became unreachable. I spent the night here until morning,” Were stated.

At 7:53 pm, Rosemary, Benedict and Sophia boarded the saloon car, with Rosemary holding the baby. Jane remained outside talking to Benedict as Sophia got into the vehicle, which then drove away.

“Up to now, I have not found my child. I do not know where he is,” Were stated.

Rosemary was later arrested in Mowlem. Benedict, the alleged driver, reportedly told detectives that the child had been taken to a facility linked to Rosemary.

However, when Rosemary was asked to lead detectives to the baby, she allegedly took them to an apartment in Chokaa, identified as room number seven. The door was closed, and neighbours reportedly did not recognise her.

Investigators believe she may have led detectives to her daughter's house rather than her official residence.

When she was arraigned, Rosemary told the court that she was unwell. She was taken to Nairobi Women's Hospital before being referred to Kenyatta National Hospital and later Mbagathi Hospital.

One week after the baby went missing, the two-week-old child has yet to be found. Three suspects, described as alleged medics, remain in custody, while the vehicle believed to have been used to transport the baby has been impounded.
