The twists and turns of the Democracy for Citizens Party's political game plan delivered a landslide victory in Ol Kalou Constituency, Nyandarua County.

It was a well-orchestrated strategy that saw the party's candidate, Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru, garner 35,440 votes against his closest challenger, the United Democratic Alliance's Samuel Muchina Nyaga, who received 5,450 votes.

Here's a look at the Ol Kalou campaign trail, the aftermath and what the victory could mean ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Ol Kalou Constituency has spoken.

Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru, flying the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) flag, is now the MP-elect after clinching the seat left vacant following the death of former MP David Njuguna Kiaraho.

The by-election attracted national attention and was widely viewed as a litmus test ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The campaign trail was characterised by high-octane politics, with political heavyweights from across the divide pitching camp in the constituency for weeks.

For former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the contest was more than an opportunity to secure the first parliamentary seat for his newly formed DCP. It was also a chance to reaffirm his political influence in Nyandarua County and the wider Mt Kenya region.

Through carefully crafted campaign messaging, a series of rallies and strategic planning meetings that stretched late into the night at Nyandarua Senator John Methu's rural home in Mugumo Village, Rurii Ward, DCP gradually executed its political game plan.

During the campaigns, Sammy Kamau, popularly known as Kamau Ngotho, was reportedly referred to by his political opponents as a "chokoraa", a derogatory Swahili term commonly used to describe homeless people or street children.

Rather than shy away from the label, his campaign turned it into a rallying call.

Supporters launched a grassroots fundraising drive, with hundreds contributing Ksh.10 each to buy him a suit for his swearing-in as MP, an early indication that, for many DCP supporters, victory was not a question of if, but when.

Residents also witnessed what many described as one of the most expensive political contests in the country's history, characterised by handouts, gifts, intensive voter mobilisation and last-minute government development projects.

On Thursday, July 16, 2026, voters turned out in large numbers, recording an impressive 57 per cent voter turnout, unusually high for a parliamentary by-election.

And voting was only part of the story.

Supporters of the DCP remained stationed at several polling centres to guard against what they feared could be attempts to interfere with the electoral process.

Pockets of violence were reported across the constituency, with hooded armed men allegedly moving in Toyota Land Cruisers and Prado vehicles causing disruptions.

But those incidents did little to dampen the resolve of local residents.

Civilian roadblocks were mounted on major roads leading into the constituency, with vehicles, including police vehicles, being stopped and inspected by residents determined to protect the integrity of the vote.

That vigilance, coupled with minute-by-minute monitoring of tallying centres and coordinated updates from polling stations to social media platforms, ensured that supporters closely tracked the counting process.

By the end of the exercise, DCP had secured a commanding victory.

Its candidate, now MP-elect Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru, garnered 35,440 votes, defeating UDA's Samuel Muchina Nyaga, who received 5,450 votes.

They came, they voted and they stayed to ensure that every vote counted.

From an ambitious agricultural economist to a Member of the Nyandarua County Assembly representing Karau Ward, and now on his way to the National Assembly, Kamau's political rise has been swift.

His victory is widely viewed as a significant boost for the Democracy for Citizens Party in the Mt Kenya region and a major political statement as parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 General Election.
