The rise of Anthony Lemachira: From dusty tracks to dream lanes

Sixteen years ago, on the dusty grounds of Gatu Primary School in Mashuru, Kajiado County, a young boy tightened his worn-out shoelaces before stepping onto the track. He was not chasing medals or fame. He was chasing a dream.

Today, that same boy, Anthony Lemachira, has emerged as one of Kenya's promising sprinters, earning the rare opportunity to line up alongside Africa's fastest man, Victor Omanyala, during the 2026 Commonwealth Games trials.

 

Born into a humble family of six, Anthony discovered his love for athletics at age 13, when he joined the track team at Gatu Primary School. What began as a school activity soon became the foundation of a lifelong ambition.

His breakthrough came when he was selected to represent his school at an international athletics competition in Uganda.

Crossing the finish line that day changed everything.

 

“Running has been more than a sport for me. It has opened so many doors for me to continue creating a brighter future for myself, my family, and my community. I intend to keep on pressing on, and one day I know that I will carry the Kenyan flag high in international races,” says Anthony.

 

From that moment, running became his purpose. Every early morning training session, every sprint on rough village tracks, and every sacrifice brought him one step closer to his dream.

 

His talent caught the attention of Coach Sam during an athletics camp in Kibera. Under the coach's mentorship, Anthony's raw speed was refined into disciplined performance.

He learned the importance of race strategy, endurance, breathing techniques, and mental preparation, qualities that would elevate him from a gifted runner into a serious competitor.

 

The breakthrough soon followed. Anthony announced himself on the regional stage after winning the East Africa Games, proving he could compete with the best. His confidence continued to grow after joining Transcend Academy in Kitale, where he trained relentlessly while balancing education and athletics.

 

Another life-changing opportunity came when he participated in athletics trials organized by the KCB Foundation. Anthony dominated both the 100-metre and 200-metre heats, earning recognition and support that strengthened his resolve to pursue athletics professionally.

 

Perhaps the defining moment of Anthony's journey came at the 2026 Commonwealth Games trials. Standing in the starting blocks beside his childhood idol, Victor Omanyala, he experienced what had once seemed impossible.

 

Although he clocked 11.00 seconds and did not secure qualification, Anthony left the track inspired rather than disappointed.

 

"Competing alongside Victor showed me that the gap between dreaming and achieving is not as wide as I once thought. It motivated me to work even harder,” he said.

 

Today, Anthony remains focused on improving his speed, building his endurance, and gaining valuable competitive experience. His ambition extends beyond qualifying for major championships; he wants to establish himself among Africa's elite sprinters and inspire young athletes from rural communities to believe that their circumstances do not define their future.

 

From the dusty tracks of Mashuru to sharing the stage with Kenya's sprinting icon, Anthony Lemachira's journey is proof that greatness often begins with a single step taken in faith. For Anthony, the finish line is still a long way ahead. The race has only just begun.
