The government is set to roll out an electronic birth notification system aimed at reducing paperwork, eliminating delays and streamlining the registration of births across the country.

Speaking during the Mazingira Day celebrations in Nandi County, Immigration Principal Secretary Kipsang Belio said the department is working around the clock to ensure hospitals can electronically capture and transmit birth details directly for processing.

Belio said the system will enable hospitals to enter essential information, including the child's name, parents' names, date and place of birth, before submitting the details electronically for the generation of a Unique Personal Identifier (UPI).

" As part of celebrations, we will train our hospital personnel to ensure that once our mothers deliver, they receive an e-notification to clear them. This means they will not need to come to our offices to get a birth certificate," Bitok stated.

"Once the baby receive the Unique Person Identifier which will be later transformed to the ID No once they reach 18 years and will be used throughout their lifetime."

He noted that the initiative will reduce reliance on traditional paperwork and make the registration process faster and more efficient.

According to Belio, the UPI numbers will enable children to be identified within the education system and other government services.

He added that once they attain the age of 18, the numbers can be linked to the process of acquiring national identity cards.

The Principal Secretary further revealed that the immigration department is building capacity in hospitals across the country to ensure they have the necessary systems and expertise to implement the new initiative.

The planned rollout is expected to strengthen birth registration services and establish a more efficient digital identification system, easing access to government services for Kenyans.
