Residents of Nkugwe, Ntatua and Kanini in Mwimbi Ward in Tharaka-Nithi County have raised concern over the growing sale and consumption of illicit alcohol.
Locals told Citizen Digital that the illicit trade is linked to an increase in theft cases, including house break-ins and burglaries.
The residents say the proliferation of illicit brew dens and drinking joints has also become a concern for education stakeholders, with some establishments operating near schools.
They fear continued access to illicit alcohol could disrupt students’ learning and contribute to increased school dropout rates.
The residents are calling on the government and security agencies to intensify patrols in the affected areas and take action against those involved in the sale of illicit alcohol.
They say stronger enforcement will help restore security and create a safer environment for residents to live, work and pursue development.
