The Kenya Amateur Wrestling Association has officially named the national team that will represent the country at the upcoming African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria, Egypt.
The squad features a strong mix of cadet, junior, and senior wrestlers, with a notable emphasis on youth development.
The cadet team, composed of athletes aged 16 and 17, is part of a long-term strategy aimed at preparing competitors for the Youth Olympic Games scheduled to take place in Dakar, Senegal.
The cadet female team heads into the competition with confidence, as all members are returning medalists from the 2025 African Championships held in Casablanca, Morocco.
Cadet wrestler Clinton Omari will also be looking to build on his success after securing two bronze medals at the 2025 African Schools Games in Annaba, Algeria.
Speaking after the team announcement, Secretary General Eric Walucho acknowledged the challenges faced during selection, particularly due to financial constraints.
“It has been a tough task, but we have finally come to a conclusion in naming the team. We would have preferred a larger senior squad, but budget limitations have restricted us. That said, preparations are in high gear. The cadet female wrestlers are all proven medalists, led by Jemimah Wanjala, an Olympian and a strong performer at last year’s African Beach Games. The team represents a blend of youth and experience, and we are hopeful of bringing glory to Kenya,” he said.
The team is expected to depart soon as final preparations intensify ahead of the continental showpiece in Alexandria.
