Leaders of (KUPPET) in the county have given police a 24-hour ultimatum to arrest the suspect, Peter Kanumbi, after reports that he has been seen roaming freely in Ngurubani town despite his photograph being widely circulated.
KUPPET Kirinyaga branch chairman Paul Mboco and JSS KUPPET secretary Josphat Kariuki warned that teachers would take action if the suspect is not apprehended within the deadline.
“The picture of the suspect is being circulated and no arrest has been made despite him being seen in Ngurubani town. We are giving police 24 hours to arrest the suspect; failure to that, we know what we will do as teachers,” the union officials said.
Nyaga, who taught at Ithiga Ria Njuki Primary School in Riagiceru Location, had been missing since Monday before her body was discovered on Thursday morning. Authorities believe she may have been killed elsewhere and the body later dumped near the river.
According to Nyangati Location Chief Immaculate Wanjiru Njoka, preliminary reports indicate the teacher’s boyfriend from Nguchui village could be responsible for the killing. Nyaga’s father, Jeremiah Nyaga, told police he received a call around midnight from the suspect, who claimed to be her boyfriend and said she had been found at Mugomoini and was unresponsive.
Police from Wang’uru Police Station have launched investigations and are searching for the suspect, who remains at large.
Nyaga’s relatives described her as a dedicated teacher and a loving mother who leaves behind a young child, and they are urging authorities to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
