Shock engulfed Kianjege village in Ndia, Kirinyaga County on Monday after a 47-year-old man who is a primary school teacher killed his friend, a 65-year-old retired primary school teacher, and surrendered himself to police.

According to the suspect's relatives, Elijah Wanjohi called his elder sister in the morning and told her to take him to the Kianjege police post because he had killed his friend and his body was lying at his compound.

“He recorded the statement and together with the police officers, he took us to his compound where we found Mbuthia lying in a pool of blood,” the teacher’s sister, Regina Njeri, said.

Shocked residents said they could not believe Wanjohi could kill his friend, Caxton Mbuthia, as the two were good friends.

“The two were drinking together at Kianjege shopping centre with another man and around 2 am, as the two were leaving the local bar, Mbuthia decided to escort Wanjohi to his compound after that, what transpired, only God knows,” a resident who identified himself as Maina said.

Njeri told Citizen Digital that three months ago, she had taken her brother to a rehabilitation centre over excessive drinking.

“He had even separated from his wife and children for three years and I thought after taking him to the rehabilitation centre he would change, now he has killed Mr Mbuthia,” Njeri said.

Ndia sub-county police commander Moses Koskei said the teacher used a fork jembe to kill his friend.

“We found him lying in a pool of blood at 11 am in the suspect’s compound with serious injuries all over his body,” Koskei said.

The police boss said Wanjohi has been taken to Baricho police station where he is being interrogated as the victim's body has been taken to Karatina Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
