Tana River governor Godhana fronted as new FPK party leader

The proposed leadership change emerged from consultations involving Coast-based delegates and civil society representatives seeking to reposition the party and give it a stronger regional presence while maintaining a national outlook.

Godhana is expected to oversee the restructuring of FPK as the party seeks to establish itself as a political vehicle for the Coast region and expand its structures across the six counties represented by the Jumuiya ya Kaunti za Pwani (JKP)—Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu and Taita Taveta.

JKP has previously brought the six governors together around shared economic and development interests.

According to the delegates, the decision followed growing concerns over the increasing influence of other political parties in the Coast region and what they described as the need for the region to chart its own political direction.

FPK, which is listed by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties as a fully registered political party, seeks to position itself as a party of choice for Coast residents while retaining a national outlook.
