Police in Kajiado County are on the lookout for more than 20 suspects who fled after being caught by residents while slaughtering 34 donkeys at Kichakani in Ereteti, Kajiado West.

It is reported that the suspects had slaughtered the donkeys, intending to transport and sell the meat in Nairobi.

Two vehicles and one motorcycle were seized after the suspects escaped when locals confronted them during the slaughter.

A spot check by Citizen Digital revealed donkey carcasses scattered along the riverbank in Ereteti village, Kajiado West.

Some donkeys had already been skinned and packed into bags, while others were awaiting processing.

Residents said that upon raising the alarm, the suspects fled, leaving the carcasses strewn across the area.

According to Gideon Ndapaya, the number of donkeys slaughtered was likely higher than what was found at the scene.

Area Chief Edward Mopel added that such incidents are not new. "The carcasses are usually buried by the criminals to mask the smell. This has been ongoing for some time," Mopel stated.

Two vehicles, believed to be used to transport the meat, were impounded at the scene.

Animal rights activists, led by Sylvester Wakhu, condemned the act, noting that illegal donkey slaughter has become increasingly widespread, especially in Kajiado West and Central Kajiado.

Kajiado West Public Health Officer Jeremiah Lalaito urged residents to remain vigilant and report similar incidents promptly to enable appropriate action.
