Police in Nanyuki have shot dead a suspected robber and arrested another following a robbery incident in Mugambi Estate, Laikipia County, during which officers recovered a pistol and ammunition.

Laikipia East OCPD Daniel Kitavi said the officers were on routine patrol following a series of robbery incidents reported in the area over the past month.

He said CCTV footage from the estate had captured suspects robbing households during the day and at night and making away with valuables.

According to the OCPD, police received reports on Tuesday night that four armed suspects — one allegedly brandishing a Beretta pistol — were actively robbing members of the public in the area.

Officers responded, but the suspects attempted to flee and opened fire at police, prompting officers to return fire, Kitavi said.

One suspect was fatally shot at the scene, while another was arrested. Two other suspects escaped into the estate.

Police said a search led to the recovery of a pistol, a magazine with two rounds of 9mm ammunition, cash, and identification documents belonging to the deceased suspect.

The suspect was identified as 33-year-old Kelvin Macharia Ngatia. His body was taken to Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary pending formal identification and a post-mortem examination.

Detectives from the DCI have launched a manhunt for the two remaining suspects.
