Police in Machakos County have seized a large haul of suspected illegal drugs after a suspect escaped arrest during a patrol in Ekalakala area.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), officers from Ekalakala Police Station were on routine patrol within Ekalakala Market when they noticed a man carrying a bulky sack under suspicious circumstances.

The individual reportedly dropped the bag and fled on foot after spotting the officers, managing to evade capture.

Upon inspecting the abandoned bag, the officers recovered assorted items believed to be linked to drug trafficking, including 49 brooms, approximately seven kilogrammes of suspected cannabis and 25 packets of rolling papers.

Police have launched investigations to identify and arrest the suspect, as well as to establish whether other individuals may be involved in the incident.

"The National Police Service reiterates its unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order and remains vigilant through sustained patrols, intelligence-led operations, and swift responses to any activities that threaten public safety," NPS stated.
