Suba United, a select side comprising standout performers from the Suba Lowlands annual tournaments, are in Nairobi for a series of friendly matches designed to expose grassroots talent to the demands and opportunities of top-flight football.

The team are taking on Kenyan Premier League sides Kariobangi Sharks, Kenya Police FC and KCB FC in an initiative aimed at bridging the long-standing gap between rural football and the professional game.

Their opening match, played on Tuesday, proved a tough introduction, with Suba United falling 7-1 to Kariobangi Sharks at the Utalii Grounds. Despite the heavy defeat, the fixture served its core purpose, which is to offer the players a rare chance to perform in front of elite-level coaches and scouts.

In many parts of Kenya, promising footballers remain confined to grassroots competitions due to limited exposure and structured scouting pathways. This tour seeks to change that narrative by placing these emerging talents directly in competitive environments where they can be assessed.

The program is sponsored by Raymond Omollo, patron of Kenya Police FC, and carries a dual objective which is nurturing football talent while addressing social challenges such as youth unemployment and crime by providing alternative pathways through sport.

Suba United head coach George Otieno Solo, a former Gor Mahia player, explains the importance of the initiative, particularly in addressing the lack of visibility at the grassroots level.

"Our main purpose in coming to Nairobi is to bring these boys so that their talents do not go to waste down there. We've come here so that these teams we are going to play with can see if there are players who may please them and if they can sign some of them," he said.

Solo believes the arrangement could act as a crucial pipeline, enabling talented players from Homa Bay to transition into the Kenyan Premier League.

Suba United will next face Kenya Police FC on Wednesday before concluding their tour against KCB FC at the Karen Grounds on Thursday, hopeful that their performances will open doors to professional contracts.
