Strathmore University today defeated Kenyatta University 27-22
in was closely contested and thrilling Divison One Handball League match at Nyayo
National Stadium.
It was an end-to-end affair from the first whistle, with both
sides showing determination and energy in attack, resulting to a 13-13 tie
going into the break.
Strathmore, however, looked more organised in the second half
and took control of the game after capitalising on several scoring
opportunities. They ensured the narrow leads they got across the second stanza
remained to the end, much to the joy of head coach Victor Siero who feels the
win is a signal of good days ahead.
“The victory means a lot to the team, especially after losing our
last two matches. This is our second victory in the second leg of the season which
shows signs of improvement within the squad,” he observed.
Siero also noted that the team is currently going through a
transition period as they continue rebuilding and adjusting to changes within
the squad.
“We lost a couple of players through injuries, but we managed to
emerge victorious because we had an experienced player who controlled the game
and motivated the younger players,” said Siero.
He praised the players for remaining focused throughout the game
despite the pressure from their opponents.
Strathmore captain Stanley Otieno admitted that the team had
expected a tough encounter and became worried after the two sides ended the
first half level.
“In the first half we organised ourselves well, and that is what helped us win the game,” said Otieno.
The captain added that despite the victory, the team still has
areas they need to improve on, especially in defense and fitness ahead of their
upcoming fixtures.
