Starlets captain Mwanahalima shields Odemba after WAFCON collapse

Kenya's hopes of reaching the knockout stages were extinguished after another underwhelming tournament, extending the Starlets' struggles on the continental stage.

Despite showing flashes of promise, they were unable to convert performances into results, leaving them without a place in the quarter-finals and prompting renewed scrutiny of the team's displays and tactical approach.

However, Mwanahalima believes criticism directed at Odemba and her technical bench is misplaced.

Speaking after the team's elimination, the experienced midfielder said while the coaching staff had prepared the side well, the players failed to execute the game plan on the pitch.

"Everything starts with the coach and the technical bench, but once we step onto the pitch, the responsibility is ours. The coaches did their part. We failed to execute the game plan, and we, as players, must take the blame."

Mwanahalima admitted the Starlets created enough opportunities during the tournament but lacked the clinical edge and discipline needed to compete at the highest level.

"We created chances, but small mistakes and our failure to adjust in key moments cost us. We needed to work harder in certain areas, and that's why we are going home earlier than we hoped."

The captain acknowledged the pain of another early exit, saying the disappointment is shared by both the players and the technical staff.

She also apologised to supporters, promising the squad would learn from the experience.

"The coach believed in us, and it is painful that we couldn't repay that faith with the results she deserved. We know our fans are disappointed, and we are disappointed too. This is a learning experience, and we have to make sure we don't repeat the same mistakes in future tournaments."
