Stanbic Aces
head coach Maurice Obilo says his team fell short of their best despite
grinding out a narrow 57-56 win over Zetech Sparks in a thrilling National
Women’s Basketball Premier League clash at Ulinzi Sports Complex.
“We didn’t play
very well, but we got the win. We’ll take the lessons from this match and go
back to work because there are many areas we need to improve on; from our
aggression and defense, to making better decisions on offense. Credit to
Zetech, they played very, very well,” said Obilo.
The encounter
was a tightly contested affair, made even more intriguing as Obilo faced his
former side, Zetech Sparks, for the first time since taking charge of Stanbic.
Both teams showed intensity throughout, with Zetech pushing the bankers to the
limit in an entertaining showdown.
The victory saw
Stanbic climb to 13 points, cementing second place on the standings after seven
matches, having registered six wins and one loss.
Despite the
defeat, Zetech Sparks moved up one place to third with 11 points from seven
outings, winning four and losing three.
On his side,
Zetech Sparks head coach Job Munene praised his players’ effort, especially in
the closing stages of the game.
“The players are
still relatively new to playing high-intensity matches, but they are adapting
well and beginning to execute things the way they should. However, playing an
opponent over the weekend with a coach who understands us and our systems made
it easier to read each other,” he said.
Defending
champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) continue to set the pace at the top with
16 points, maintaining a perfect record after winning all eight of their
matches played so far.
