Among this community is a group of young circumcised men between the ages of 8 and 15 after initiation they become warani (warriors) who are charged with tending livestock and entrusted with gathering essential information and reporting back to the elders. In times of danger, they fearlessly run towards the threat and relay the details to the elders, enabling immediate action to be taken.
According to a local resident interviewed by Wananchi Reporting, “The warani play a crucial role in ensuring the security of our community. They are responsible for protecting us and engaging in combat with any potential enemies. Additionally, during times of drought, they guide our cattle to fields with abundant grass and water sources. Their dedication to the well-being of our community and livestock is truly commendable”.
The dedication and bravery of the warani in the Samburu community and their commitment encompasses the Samburu people's rich cultural heritage and the enduring legacy of the warani warriors serves as a testament to their resilience and unity.
In a world that continues to change, they remain steadfast in preserving their traditions and safeguarding their community.
