As a section of retail players continue to struggle, newer entrants are now seeking to fill the void left behind.

Souk Bazaar has become the latest retailer to take advantage of a changing landscape, setting up its first store at the NextGen mall, a space previously occupied by struggling retailer Nakumatt.

Souk Bazaar is a fully-fledged supermarket offering a general supply of fast moving consumer goods as well as an array of electronics.

Souk Bazaar Director Abhinav Shah said the retailer would target a wide array of consumers leveraging on stocking goods that will lure customers to trickle in.

Shah says Souk Bazaar will target customers from South B and South C estates as well as customers using the busy Mombasa Road.

“Whether you are staying in Parklands or Syokimau the idea is to give the product and give back to the consumer so when they do think about shopping they are happy to travel that extra 10 minutes to go to Souk,” Mr Shah said.

Souk Bazaar will serve as the anchor tenant of the mall to pull in customers.

Nakumatt, which has been struggling under a mountain of debt, closed its store at the mall last month.

Apart from the NextGen outlet, Nakumatt also closed its TRM branch which has since been taken up by French retailer Carrefour.

Souk Bazaar which will occupy 90,000 square feet at the mall will officially open its doors on Tuesday.
